Formation of the Imperfect Subjunctive
The Imperfect Subjunctive is derived from the 3rd person plural of the Preterite. Remove the ending -ron and add the imperfect subjunctive endings.
Formula: 3rd Pers. Pl. Preterite - ron + endings
There are two forms (both are correct, the -ra form is more common):

Important: Since the Imperfect Subjunctive is derived from the 3rd person plural of the preterite, all irregularities of the preterite carry over! ser/ir → fueron → fue- → fuera, fueras, fuera, fuéramos, fuerais, fueran

3Usage
Usage of the Imperfect Subjunctive
1. Hypothetical situations (si + Imperfect Subj.) In conditional sentences with si (if), when the condition is unlikely or counterfactual. Si tuviera dinero, viajaría por el mundo. — If I had money, I would travel the world.
2. Wishes, requests, emotions in the past When the main verb is in the past. Quería que vinieras. — I wanted you to come. Era importante que estudiara. — It was important that he study.
3. Polite requests (querer, poder) Quisiera un café, por favor. — I would like a coffee, please. ¿Pudiera hablar con usted? — Might I speak with you?
4. Ojalá + Imperfect (unlikely wish) Ojalá tuviera más tiempo. — If only I had more time!
